Dual Reality

Acrylic, 18x24

This painting reflects my identity as a Korean American through the language of food. The composition is divided into two halves — one representing an American lunch of a sandwich, cookie, and drink, the other showing Korean dishes like kimbap, bibimbap ingredients, and a fried egg.

The left side, layered with newspaper and muted tones, symbolizes the everyday familiarity of growing up in American culture. The right side, with its vivid colors and organized plates, conveys the richness and structure of my Korean heritage.

The division between the two meals captures the balance and coexistence of my dual identity. Rather than opposing forces, these foods share the same table — expressing how I blend both traditions into a single, personal experience of belonging.
